Friday the 13th: Camp Crystal Lake Cocktail

The perfect way to spice up your Friday the 13th horror movie marathon!
Celebrate Friday the 13th with this spicy sweet tribute cocktail. Rosemary and sweet lemon will remind you of sipping lemonade among the pines at summer camp, while spicy shards of candy will catch you when you least expect it! This cocktail can be served as an up drink, or you can give it a slower pace by adding club soda. How will you survive your time at Camp Crystal Lake? Will you down it quickly and face the the hard candy head on, or will you take your time, and let the candy infuse your drink with color and spice?

Creating your own killer shards of candy is easy. Combine sugar, water and corn syrup (be sure to use light corn syrup, or the candy will come out dark and cloudy) over medium heat, stirring continually until the mixture reaches 300° F on a candy thermometer. It's important to reach this temperature, or else the candy will not shatter. While the candy is heating, line a baking sheet with raised edges with foil and spray lightly with cooking spray. Once the mixture reaches 300° F, remove it from heat and quickly add the food coloring, rosemary sprig and cayenne powder, add more food coloring if you want a darker red. Pour the mixture onto the prepared, lined baking sheet, remove the rosemary sprig, and move into the refrigerator until it has cooled and hardened, roughly 40 minutes. Once set, use a meat mallet or similar tool to break the candy into shards.

Prepare your rosemary simple syrup by combining water, sugar and a sprig of rosemary in small pot, over medium high heat. You can also add a very small pinch of cayenne pepper to this mixture, if you do not want to make hard candy to garnish your drink with. Stir until the mixture comes to a boil and the sugar has dissolved. Remove rosemary sprig and refrigerate until cool.

On the the dramatic finale! Combine rosemary syrup, lemon juice and your choice of gin or vodka into a shaker with ice. Shake until very cold. If serving as an up drink, strain into a chilled up glass and garnish with candy shards and a sprig of rosemary. If serving as a spritzer, strain into a rocks glass with ice. Add club soda and stir to combine. Garnish with a rosemary sprig and candy shards. Sip and enjoy--good luck making it to the end of the drink!


Rosemary cayenne candy:
½ cup water
1 cup sugar
¼ cup light corn syrup
1 sprig rosemary
4 drops red food coloring
¼ tsp cayenne pepper

Rosemary simple syrup:
⅓ cup water
⅓ sugar
Rosemary sprig

¾ oz rosemary syrup
½ oz lemon juice
1½ oz gin or vodka
4 oz club soda for spritzer
Rosemary sprig for garnish

I was a little hesitant of the candy at first, but after trying it just on its own I can say with full confidence it tastes great. I am not a huge spice fan to begin with, but the cayenne is nicely balanced by the sweet and the rosemary. 8/10 would eat on its own again.
